Join writer and independent scholar Matthew Battles for a tour of the
Forest Hills Cemetery in Boston's Jamaica Plain neighborhood.
Like a
locket at the end of the Emerald Necklace, Forest Hills Cemetery
encloses memories that both charm and haunt New England's metropolis.
The final resting place of Anne Sexton, e.e. cummings, and Eugene
O'Neill, the cemetery boasts graves of Revolutionary figures and
leaders of the abolition movement as well.
A stroll through its
arborescent landscape reveals puddingstone outcrops and gravestones of
fossil wood, haunting sculptures, and crypts evoking the Gothic, the
Gaelic, and the Art Deco. Part of a vast necropolis where a diverse
modern city lays its dead to rest, strange and lovely Forest Hills
tells Boston's story in stone and memories.

Please meet at 2:30 PM, at the front entrance to the cemetery on Morton Street.
Please wear appropriate clothing for the outdoors and sturdy walking shoes.
